First Day of Work

Today is my first day at work, as a web developer for Stanford Alumni Mentoring. It’s weird getting paid to write code. I’ve spent much of my life writing code just for fun, that it’s an unfamiliar experience getting paid to do something I enjoy as a hobby.

Today is also the day Alfred left for Phoenix for a conference. He will fly to LA in a few days to look for a place to live for his duration at “Boing,” which starts in two weeks. While I will miss that character, having a flexible sleep schedule will be a welcome relief.

The last month, I have been tinkering with business ideas, applying for jobs and internships, and just relaxing. Even then, and even now, I still have so many things with which to occupy my time outside of work. It will take great discipline to give priority to the things that matter (i.e., reading Scripture, praying, and reading books in general).

On the topic of books, I am currently reading Crystal Fire, Joel on Software, and Above All Earthly Pow’rs. In queue are How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth, The Reason for God, The Mythical Man-Month, and Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.
